The Big Corner Office

While I was in Minneapolis, some things were changing back on my home campus. The politics of the situation created an opportunity (or is a duty?) for me to serve as interim department chair for the fall term. The transition from a year+ of sabbatical to being in the office everyday is going to be abrupt, but the staff is good and I won't have to do some of the more onerous budget tasks that only come up in the winter term. The extra compensation will be nice too.

I do find it rather amusing that I will officially take over this responsibility-laden job on the day I turn 40!

What's the honorific for an interim department chair? "Chair"? "Chairwoman"? "Madame Chairperson"?

While I enjoy... er, relish... er, delight... in calling you "Dr. H" or "the Award-Winning Dr. H", I don't know how much I'm going to latch onto "Chair H". You should probably pick something good, 'cause the only title I like so far is "Madame Interim Chairwoman".

If you're uncomfortable with honorifics, you can always console yourself by thinking of how many times there will be the opportunity for people to, only politely, interject with "if it please the chair..."

That's what you get for being all capable and responsible and shit. Congratulations, and be sure to make the most of the end of your thirties! Not that the forties are bad, not at all.

I've been meaning to congratulate you and compliment you on your willingness to take this on! You rock!

PS: I am a "Dr" too, and it never ever gets old :) (I've had it since I was 24 and I'm 36 now)
